			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I am often asked by friends how to get started on an exercise regimen or how to develop a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule. The phrase &#8216;<a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule&#8217; sounds so formal, but don&#8217;t be intimidated. Whether people realize it or not, almost everyone who exercises even a little has a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule. They may not have written it down, but even the busy working mother of two who takes walks twice a week with a small group of neighbors is on a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule of sorts.</p>
<p>Call it whatever works for you, but either way a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule simply refers to how often and how far you desire to run, lift, walk, row, bike each week in order to meet your <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a> goals. Be it after work, during lunch or on the weekends, it doesn&#8217;t matter. You don&#8217;t have to be a world class athlete to have a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule. In fact, you probably need one more than they do.</p>
<p>As I mentioned in a March 1, 2010 posting (Running, <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">Training</a> and Racing; Start with a Goal), setting the proper goal for yourself is the key to designing a schedule that will both fit your lifestyle as well as get you in the shape you&#8217;re hoping. Ultimately your goals and what activities you&#8217;ll utilize must account for things such as available time to exercise each day, health concerns, personal interest, climate in which you live and the level of <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a> to be achieved just to name a few. If you have a lot of trouble with your knees, perhaps running six days a week would be a poor choice. Hate running? Then initially don&#8217;t design a <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='workout';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">workout</a> schedule with a lot of running. After all, you do want to enjoy your <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a>.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that within everyone&#8217;s aspirations to get fit there are compromises. Only have two hours a week to exercise? Then build your schedule accordingly. Have unlimited time, but a modest goal of shedding 5 pounds and only limited interest in doing so? Then build your schedule around that. Whatever your targets, plug all the data in and see what you come up with. If you don&#8217;t like the result of your first schedule then review it and design another schedule. At some point you&#8217;ll look at one of your draft <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedules and think &#8220;I can do that&#8221;. You are now on your way.</p>
<p>Now that you have a schedule written down plan to keep it and use it. If you&#8217;re serious about your <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a> goals sit down and plan out the entire months of exercise. This sounds a lot harder than it is. Your schedule is likely to repeat itself each week so this may be as easy as copy-paste, copy-paste since most of us have a fairly predicable and repetitive schedule. We&#8217;ll have to discuss how dull our lives are at another time. For now let&#8217;s stay focused on spicing it up a bit with some exercise and <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a>. The entire process will also help you organize your life schedule and many people find that helpful too.</p>
<p>The correct use of a pre-planned schedule is not to tie you down to this written-in-stone document to a point where you can barely get yourself to look at it, but just the opposite. Having a preplanned written version of your schedule will give you piece of mind that you&#8217;re progressing towards your goals. I think it&#8217;s similar to looking at your work resume for the first time in five years and realizing &#8220;darn, I&#8217;ve done a lot&#8221;.</p>
<p>My personal <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule goes out nearly twelve months. Since I like to do organized events this helps me plan both personal time and <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> around specific dates. I also like the no brainer approach to just looking at my <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule and knowing what I am going to do tomorrow. I make changes all the time on the fly, but I don&#8217;t have to worry about sitting down each week and planning my week. It really allows me to enjoy the activity with little thought around planning.</p>
<p>Maintaining a journal, no matter how minor you think your progress is, will give you a chance to appreciate what you&#8217;ve done and what you want to do moving forward. And interestingly, I&#8217;ve found that a written schedule is just as valuable in keeping you from over doing things. After a few days of only light running or days off, I&#8217;ll frequently feel like I&#8217;ve been a slug or lazy and begin to feel guilty for not exercising. However, when I look at my schedule I&#8217;ll see I either had already done a lot of exercise that week or I had scheduled days off knowing I would need a break. Being of sound mind when you make your schedule and then honoring it will help you from developing injuries as much as it will help you in getting fit.</p>
<p>I should qualify a few things at this point. Because a schedule is preplanned doesn&#8217;t make it inflexible. On the contrary, I find having a simple calendar-type format in Excel gives me a ton of flexibility when it comes to my planning. I&#8217;ll give you an example. I got a call from a friend last week who was flying into town and wanted to meet for dinner that night after work. Unfortunately, I had a race planned in two weeks and my schedule was perfectly set up with an eight mile run planned that evening. Did I skip dinner because of panic over my schedule? Of course not. I looked at my written plan, moved everything over a day or two realizing I had spot in my schedule to make it work. I had a relaxing dinner with an old friend and a very nice run two nights later.</p>
<p>To many readers the last two paragraphs might seem a little over the top or even ridiculous. I won&#8217;t argue with you, but I will promise you that months after you&#8217;ve set your goals and designed your first schedule and then get back to your busy life, you&#8217;ll forget what those goals were and how you had ever figured out how to work them into your real life. How many people have you heard say &#8220;I was doing so well, and then&#8230;&#8221;.?</p>
<p>The advice I&#8217;ve provided is applicable to anyone beginning or currently in an exercise mode. It&#8217;s impossible to design a personalized <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedule for an individual I&#8217;ve never met, so I won&#8217;t attempt to do that here. But if you&#8217;ve read this posting and the &#8220;Running, <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">Training</a> and Racing; Start with a Goal&#8221; article, you should now be able to do further research on the specific activities you want to focus as well as developing a better sense of the volume of <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> you&#8217;re able and willing to pursue.</p>
<p>A last word about getting started. A personal trainer is great, but if you&#8217;re comfortable with it there are also lots of <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> schedules on the Internet which serve as helpful resources. Be careful with just taking a schedule off the Internet and implementing it. I have seen dozens on schedules online and none fit me perfectly, but almost all of them have something to offer. Review as many schedules as you can (whatever your sport or activity) and pick through a number of them to build a comfortable regimen. Then change it as your body and life dictate. As always, visit a doctor and advise him of your <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a> plans before starting. To my children, exercise means chasing each other, playing hide-and-go-seek, jumping and playing at the park. To kids, keeping fit is fun, as not much thought is put into exercise. Exercise means something altogether different to me.</p>
<p>When I was in college and throughout my 20s, <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='fitness';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">fitness</a> was a priority. Going to the gym was a regular habit, much like praying. Living in the city meant you walked everywhere. Healthy eating, which included Organic foods, was fairly easy to do. However, once I started having children, exercise became much more of a challenge. Many things can get in the way of it, such as family responsibilities, work and running a household. Now that I have hit 40 and my doctor wants to check my cholesterol, bone density, etc., exercise is a necessity.</p>
<p>Health and weight were never issues to think about years ago, but somehow the years have crept up quickly and I find myself realizing that exercise is more of a priority than ever. Finding the time is much more of a challenge. With three small children, it is difficult to just pack a bag and head to the gym. Constantly, I remind myself about the benefits of keeping fit. For instance, plenty of regular exercise will help me sleep better, move easier and keep my weight in check. Keeping fit with my body will also improve my mind and my thinking, having a better attitude and outlook on life is another benefit.</p>
<p>As I head back to the teaching world this coming August, I need to find blocks of time for keeping fit. I decided that I am going to buy those thick-soled shoes so I can walk for 20 minutes once I get up, then walk during my lunch hour. If I combine the exercise with some healthier food choices, than keeping fit should, once again, become an easy habit for me.</p>
<p>Once I am back in the habit of keeping fit, hopefully my husband will join me.</p>

<p>The fist technique is to use a few of your normal workouts but doing them when you are balancing yourself as well. But, just what is your core and how much do you really know about it?</p>
<p>Your core consists of all the muscles that make up your abdomen, lower &amp; upper back, pelvic girdle, and shoulder girdle. Basically if you were to remove your arms and legs what you&#8217;d be left with is your core.</p>
<p>So what is your core designed to do? Well, if you look at the most popular exercises and devices used to train it you would say trunk flexion (the motion of bringing your shoulders to your hips, e.g. crunches). But, the crunching movement is just one of many movements your core is capable of doing and is actually the least performed movement in everyday life.</p>
<p>So if your core wasn&#8217;t designed to crunch then what was it designed to do? Well, according to research done by Escamilla et al done in 2006 and Youdas, et al in 2008 the core is designed to stabilize the spine, resist lumbar rotation, and resist hyperextension. Both of these studies looked at the <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='muscle';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">muscle</a> activation levels of common core exercises and found that exercises that promote spinal stability, whether it be resisting lumbar rotation or resisting hyperextension, elicit greater <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='muscle';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">muscle</a> activation of the core muscles than any variation of crunch or abdominal exercise device.</p>
<p>Also it has been found that while crunches do not elicit the highest <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='muscle';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">muscle</a> activation of the core muscles they have also been shown to damage the spine. Dr. Stuart McGill of the University of Waterloo and leading researcher of back health has found that by repeating the crunching motion over and over can potentially lead to disc herniations. According to the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health any compressive force on the spine greater that 3,300 newtons is unsafe. McGill&#8217;s research has found that each crunch creates a compressive force of 3,350 newtons, 50 newtons higher than the safe limit.</p>
<p>When it comes to <a href="http://www.bodysculptworkout.net/workoutwith/chalean" style="" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" onmouseover="self.status='training';return true;" onmouseout="self.status=''">training</a> your core your focus should be on exercises stabilize your core and prevent hyperextension and lumbar rotation. These exercises will keep your core strong and healthy, unlike running the risk of a disc herniation from doing too many crunches.</p>

People look for different things in their trainers depending what their goals and plans are. Are you a novice who needs instruction to gain basic understanding? Or do you just like someone to walk around the gym with and make small talk? Any of those are legitimate uses for a trainer, but depending on your trainer, they may have other ideas.</p>
<p>You are the one in charge. You are the one who is paying for the services, so you get to choose what you want them to do. If they have other ideas, you should either listen to them, or get another trainer who is better matched to your needs and wants. Any trainer you use should be certified through some sort of recognized organization. ISSA, NSCA and NASM are the &#8220;big three&#8221; and most well known, but others can be just as valid.</p>
<p>Know what your goals are when you talk to a trainer. Do you want to be stronger or do you want to lose body fat? Are you looking for some different exercises to challenge your body or do you want to learn about something more specific? Trainers specialize in certain areas so you definitely want to know that they are a good fit for you. What is their style? Are they laid back and more of a guide or are they drill sergeant material? Some people really want someone to drive them hard, other people like a gentle &#8220;I&#8217;m your friend&#8221; approach. Where do you fit on that scale?</p>

This is not because it is necessarily difficult to do the things that you have set yourself up to do but more likely because of mental traps that they fall into without realizing it. Here are a few tricks to avoid those traps.</p>
<p>Try to be around like-minded people as much as you can and actively avoid those who are likely to be inimical to your plans. This means hanging out with active people who talk about and do healthy things and avoid those who like to eat junk food and sit around lazily.</p>
<p>Keep your goals strictly to yourself. Contrary to popular opinion, you do not need to force yourself to be accountable in this silly way if you are serious. More importantly, you do not want people who may feel threatened by your plans to get the opportunity to frustrate your efforts. They can bombard you with negativity and temptations and you don&#8217;t need to help them.</p>
<p>Remind and reassure yourself often about why exactly you want to get fit. Do you want to have more energy? Look better? Attract that new person? Make your ex jealous? Whatever it is, reconnecting with the emotional triggers often will keep your motivational levels up. If you ever feel like giving up or taking a break after a couple of weeks, reconnect with these emotional motivators.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t get disillusioned if you slip and fall back into your old unhealthy habits or miss a couple of workouts. This is normal, specially when you are starting out with a new lifestyle, and it doesn&#8217;t help to worry about it or feel badly about yourself. Just laugh it off and get started again with full determination.</p>
