If you are trying to set up a fitness plan to improve your overall health, you have probably been asking how much exercise do I need to do to get the benefits that come with leading a more active lifestyle? The answer may surprise you. It is not necessary to spend hours in the gym each week. A new government report shows that it only takes a half hour a day and there is a myriad of activities that qualify as exercising. The most important thing is that you get moving and do something to stay active and get your blood pumping.

The United States Health and Human Services Department (HHS) recently published its’ physical activity guidelines for Americans which state that people need to involve themselves in some type of physical activity every single day. For substantial health benefits they say “adults should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous intensity aerobic activity.”

HHS says that the activity can be spread out over the course of the week and the course of a day. It is not necessary to exercise for 30 minutes in a row, five days a week. You can do it in ten minute blocks as it is fits into your schedule. You do not have to go to the gym or jump onto a treadmill either to accomplish the goals. A brisk walk from the car into work can qualify as a mini-workout so will taking the stairs of the office building instead of the elevator. Even gardening and simple household chores can be counted towards meeting your physical activity goals each week.

As for what qualifies for moderate physical activity and intense physical activity the HHS report gives examples of both. Moderate activities include; walking briskly, water aerobics, bicycling, doubles tennis, ballroom dancing and general gardening. Examples of intense physical activities include; jogging or running, swimming laps, singles tennis, aerobic dance, jumping rope and hiking uphill. As a general rule, when performing moderate activity you can still carry on a conversation with someone but if you are performing intense physical activity you cannot say more than a few words.

The benefits of adopting a plan to incorporate more activity into your daily life are well documented. People who exercise have a lower risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. They also report a higher quality of life in their golden years because of improved overall health. An active lifestyle also helps with weight control, the more calories that you burn each day, the more that you can consume without the fear of gaining weight. Exercise has also been shown to be a mood enhancer, so those who are participating in regular physical activity are generally happier people. With all of these reasons to get moving, there is no excuse to be wasting time sitting on the couch.

Did you ever wonder how something becomes a trend or a fad? Well, I am always intrigued when people begin to like certain things even though they don’t really know anything about them. The truth is that it is very common for people to mistake popular things for valuable things. In this case I am referring to all the buzz around Pilates, yoga and Zumba, last year’s crazes in fitness.

I’m not saying that these are not good ways to exercise, all exercise is good. The thing is that the promised fast results often never happen or when they do, they are short lived. So the question is why do these sports get all this attention, surely there must be something about them! Well the special thing about them is the great effort and ingenuity marketing departments invested in them. After all we have to keep in mind that they all promise pretty much the same thing: fast, efficient results with no effort – just fun.

Celebrity endorsements

Every time we hear that a particular celebrity does pilates or that yoga is the”thing” in Hollywood. We can’t help making an opinion about it. We see celebrities promote these sports all the time on TV, there are shows and presentations. Ever seen a comparison between one of these “cool” sports and others, chances are you’ve seen at least one of those “before and after” commercials.

The truth is that actors can be paid to say one type of gym training did wonders for their shape, and its common practice to promote things in the best possible light in order to increase sales. But if you really want to be health, keep in shape and look good you really have to put in a little effort. The first effort is choosing what works best for you, to do this you must experiment and compare to see what is your king of fitness. It’s very important to know why you want gym training, if you want to loose weight you should try one thing whereas if you want to relax you need something different.

Gym training is not fashion

Fitness is very important, that’s why you should be well informed before beginning a new program. Sometimes it is very useful to have a personal trainer or instructor to keep you motivated and to recommend what you need. If you can, try to be a little suspicious about some of the things you hear or read because it pays off to choose rationally. So the next time you hear about the new trends in fitness, remember: results are what really matter.

This article is for people who have tried to exercise but cannot keep the momentum for long, or you find exercise boring and crave for some motivation or excitement.

Exercise is the key to a healthy life. Our bodies need exercise to sustain an essential function. Our circulatory systems.

The Heart cannot pump blood efficiently throughout the body on it’s own. The veins in the body are responsible for blood on it’s return journey to the heart. The heart has a hard enough job pumping blood out, so pumping the blood back towards itself becomes quite difficult, without help from the muscles.

When your leg muscles contract they help to pump the blood back to the heart. Lack of exercise in the legs especially, is a major cause for Varicose Veins so Frequent exercise will also reduce signs of aging.

I have outlined some benefits for exercise above, for a reason. After reading the paragraph above, you will probably feel a need to create yourself an exercise plan, if I am right then you have just stumbled upon a powerful technique in improving motivation for your exercise plans. In other words exercising every day without some thought behind it becomes boring very quickly and you will start to associate your exercising with negative feelings. These bad feelings will replace your original reasons for exercising and failure is just round the corner. Eventually you will run into a fresh reason for exercising and repeat the whole thing again. The trick here is to dedicate part of the workout time to recording your progress and research into fitness and body techniques. Also it would be a good idea to subscribe to a fitness magazine.

Gyms are a good idea if you have the time although a lot of people still find that after a while they repeat the same self sabotage habit and just give up. I would define a Gym as an excellent resource for equipment however you still need to invest time into motivating the mind.

In my experience working out has a lot to do with the mind maybe even more so. If you frequently become bored during exercise please take this article seriously

If you haven’t yet embarked on the New Year’s renewal of your health habits, you soon will. And all it takes is a brief glimpse of the parking lot for any health club or fitness facility to realize things are very busy in those establishments at this time of year. Whether you’ve maintained your regular visits to the gym, or are just embarking on a new membership and a new fitness push, it’s important to be respectful of the others you meet at the gym.

Many years ago, I started my fitness regimen right after New Year’s. Though my wife and I had been members at the local health club for several years, our use of the facility had often waned… so it was like starting over as a new member. If you are in this situation this year, you’ll have to learn (or re-learn) proper gym ettiquette, just like I had to during that long-ago January.

The first thing to be aware of is how easy it is to pick up a cold (or worse) at the gym. Your gym will provide some disinfecting wipes; make sure you wipe down your equipment both before you use it and afterward. Even if you aren’t sick, make sure you cover your mouth, use tissues, etc. when you sneeze or cough. And be wary of surfaces, especially in the locker room. Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, and use paper towels when touching door handles or other common-area surfaces where germs might’ve been left behind.

Also, be aware of the rules at your gym. Most have a time limit on the use of cardio equipment, such as treadmills and ellipticals. Keep an eye on the clock, and don’t exceed the limit. When things are busy, and equipment is limited, be ready to allow other exercisers to “work in” on weightlifting equipment: you do a set, she does a set, etc. Generally, people who are pushing themselves physically are often not at their best interpersonally… so a more-than-usual dose of patience and kindness is called for, and it won’t kill you to take personal responsibility for staying out of everyone’s way (or even for seeing if they’ll match your smile with one of their own).

Meanwhile, you might be one of those regular attendees who notices the annual up-tick at your local gym, and it may be difficult for you to do so without disdain. After all, it’s harder to find a parking place, your favorite machines are more likely to be occupied, and there might be uncommon queues for everything from the front-desk registration to the showers. If you’re one of the gym rats, try to be patient and kind yourself. Remember what it was like your first week at the gym, when you didn’t know anyone and you were unsure of everything from the rules to your own chances of fitness success. Start by accepting that things are just busier in January, and by allocating more time for your daily gym trip so you won’t be as stressed-out about the delays. Try to welcome your fellow members, and when possible, even support and encourage them. It’s a nice facility, right? And you wouldn’t be using it so frequently if you didn’t enjoy it, right? So you want the facility to do well in business. You want them to stay open for your future workouts! And that means you want them to have these new customers every year… they depend on it.

One more note: be nice at work, too, with people who might not want to hear every detail about how great your new health kick is going. Eat right, take your supplements, drink your water, continue making your investments in your vitality… but definitely pull up short of judging or criticizing others who are not on your program. This is particularly true if you’re a leader… lead by example, not by tyrannical or boastful interactions. Be especially careful with sarcasm, and with kidding. Your colleagues may not think your comments are as cute as you think they are.

Good luck crafting your new body for the new year. You’ll be great. And you should also be nice and polite with others as you embark on your vitality campaign. You need the support of your fellow humans, and the healthier your community is, the better you’ll like living there. Sure, it’s tough to find a parking spot at the gym; but in many ways, remember that the old expression is really true: the more, the merrier!

Do you want to improve your chest muscles? You can work out your chest at home with a simple pair of dumbbells. Having a nice set of chest muscles is good especially if you want to eliminate the extra fat deposits that make your figure effeminate. People with gynecomastia – the condition which gives men the appearance of having small breasts – are commonly looking for exercises to replace their chest fat with muscle. Well, here are three chest exercises that uses dumbbells.

One Arm Floor Press. The one arm floor press exercises the chest muscles including your shoulder and arm muscles. Instead of using both hands, use them one at a time. Start by assuming a floor press position. One of your arms must be braced on the floor for support. Hold a dumbbell with the other arm and carry it at shoulder level. Gently extend your arm towards the ceiling while tightening your core. Bring the dumbbell down to your starting position and repeat the lifting step. Do the same number of reps on the other arm. It is important that you start with your weak side so that you would work that arm out while you are still fresh.

Alternating Dumbbell Hip Raise. After your one arm floor press routine, you can proceed to the dumbbell hip raise exercise. While lying in a floor press position, grab both dumbbells in each hand. Slowly lift your hips off the floor but keep your feet and upper back planted on the floor. Raise your left hand to the ceiling while lifting your left shoulder off the floor. Bring it down gently. Next, raise your arm in the same way that you did with your left hand. Repeat this alternating sequence for 1 – 3 sets.

Dumbbell Push-up. This is a difficult exercise to perform yet the force it gives to your chest muscles is also optimal. To do this exercise, you need to position yourself as if you are getting ready to do push-ups. The difference is that you will be holding on to the dumbbells while doing this. Perform a push-up but at the top of the movement, bring a dumbbell closer to your chest. Let the other arm support your body. Bring the dumbbell down. Perform another push-up and lift the other dumbbell to your chest. Repeat this sequence as tolerated.

Doing these exercises may take a lot of time before you can notice any change in your chest. However, only the people who persevere get what they want. If you have the right fitness equipment and the drive to do these dumbbell exercises for your chest, then you better start as early as now. Good results that last always take time. But with consistent workouts, you will surely start to sculpt a bigger, more defined chest.

So is it hard to shed that unwanted fat? May be yes! Because finding a proper exercise is rather difficult. For all those who know how to swim, the good news is that when you swim, you are able to lose a good amount of calories. It is probably the most effective form of aerobics.

This way of losing weight is one of the best and it also helps one maintain the body weight and stay active. In this form of exercise, you won’t be working any one part of your body in specific; in fact you will work on your entire body. This is a feature that is rarely available in any kind of natural exercise like running. Exercise swimming is a great stress buster too. Since the density of a human body is said to be similar to that of water. A person will not be stressing his joints while swimming. So what are the benefits of exercising by the means of swimming?

There is absolutely no stress that is put on your joints. In fact the water acts as a cushion to your joints. You will not be endangering them as you would while excessively walking or running. There is hardly any chance of one getting injured while swimming and hence has gained a lot of popularity of being a safe way to work out. There are a lot of people who have injured themselves in other forms of exercise and have now turned to swimming instead.

You don’t have to be of a certain shape, size or any category to be able to swim. Everyone can swim; No one has to be in a certain condition to swim. This makes it an excellent option for everyone of all ages.

Recently a study was conducted and the study suggested that those who spent adequate time on swimming were actually living longer. This meant that swimming actually increased the longevity. This maybe because it helps bring up the levels of immunity and keeps a person fit.

Just like elliptical trainers, diet swimming too is a great way to cross train. You will be working every part of your body when you swim. Taking up swimming before and after workout which are performed on the land helps one warm up and cool down. It’s a great way to give your muscles an excellent start as well as a way to relax.

Apart from all the physical advantages, the exercise is said to increase the mental health. For many people who have taken up swimming, it is a type of meditation which really helps them. Endless swimming makes people more mentally stable.

It is a great way to achieve weight loss. The number of calories burned in each workout in the pool is determined by dividing it by the number of miles and the actual body weight in pounds. A high intensity fitness swimming for 30 minutes can make you lose a lot of weight just like that.

The world of workout routines is growing more and more as people are turning to them to keep themselves healthy and in shape. Being involved with serious exercising involves staying committed to your program in addition to keeping your body properly fed with good minerals and nutrients. These two components working together is essential to overall success with nutrition and exercise being closely linked. Part of the purpose of this article is to explain how one without the other will never provide true success.

1. A primary important point to remember about whatever workout routines you choose is that commitment to them is extremely crucial. The reason for this is because you want to have successful results from all of your hard work and effort, which can only be achieved by regular exercise and determination to not stop or give up. When that determination is made for your exercises it also needs to be made for your diet plan. By combining a motivated commitment in both of these areas you will no doubt increase your health level and physical fitness level.

2. To start things off let’s talk about specific tips to help your exercise program. It’s always wise to begin you’re exercise routine not with the exercises your doing but rather with a simple yet effective warm up. Your warm-up session should not be random but rather focusing on the muscle groups which are going to be exercised that particular day.

3. Start stretching the muscles that you shall be working on and this will slowly raise the heart rate, as you do not want to begin an intense workout with your muscles being too tight. By not doing this to your body it can lead to you becoming injured during a workout with a pulled muscle or what not. So be sure to stretch the muscle groups that you will be concentrating on during the workouts.

4. As a proper warm-up at the beginning of your exercise routine is important so is having a cool down session at the end of it. A cool down may seem unnecessary but in actuality it allows your body to relax and the slowing of your heart rate to a normal pulse. When a proper cool down is in place your body is also more susceptible to rest and is protected from cramps or other uncomfortable problems. This would also be a good opportunity to stretch your muscles one more time.

5. What also will end up playing a huge role in the total results that you get from your workouts are the foods that you decide to eat after each workout. A best practice to regularly follow is to eat foods that are high in protein when you’re done with your workout. High-protein foods will go straight to your muscles restoring what was lost via your exercises.

It will help to rebuild and recover the fatigued part of your muscles. Always after you are done with some good cardio sessions it is essential for you to wait a short while and then eat this way. This is because your body will maximize all of the fat it just burned by using the fat that’s stored as your energy source.

6. One other very important thing for you to consider is to keep in mind to always stay hydrated. By not having enough water in the body will contribute to you becoming fatigue quite faster than you would if you did not exercise at all.

7. Also remember that when you are involved with any good workout routine to always be sure to get plenty of rest. The human body needs a lot of rest so it can recover and begin to rebuild the muscles before you ever use them again. This will also help to make sure you get the best results from your daily workout routines.

Everybody automatically thinks that just because you’re an athlete that life is easy as pie, but most people have to clue the amount of sacrifices they make in order to succeed. Most athletes spend their whole lives staying in peak condition to excel in their sport and to do this they have to workout just about every day. The way they train in their athlete’s workouts is going to be by far the most critical ingredient to their success. Even if you’re not looking to become a professional athlete anytime soon, it’s going to be important to study how an athlete works outs so you can take what works and apply it to your own workouts.

Most professional athletes workout until they’re about to throw up, but that doesn’t mean you have to. It’s important to see how much you enjoy your workouts because if you drive yourself to the point that you hate your workouts, you’re not going to want to keep doing them. I wouldn’t recommend copying and pasting an athlete’s workout routine because it’s customized for them and not for you. Be sure consider your own strength and stamina levels before you create your own workouts so you can keep progressing, but you won’t drive yourself to the point where you hate training.

You’ll never find a professional athlete who works out only every so often. In fact, most athletes train just about every day of the week. Staying consistent with your workouts is going to be one of the hardest parts of training like an athlete. After the initial motivation wears off, most people will completely fall off their training program and they’ll be nowhere in sight until they get to the point where they’re disgusted with their body. Find an accountability program such as a training partner or even an online workout forum so you can stay inspired to keep doing your athlete workouts.

Many athletes also fall into the realm of overtraining and they start to do more damage than good in their workouts. You have to make sure you’re getting in enough resources into your body such as fluids and healthy calories so you keep up with your intense workout schedule. You’ll also have to make sure that you get enough rest in between workouts by not working out too often for you body to handle and by getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Overtraining can quickly lead to injuries and plateauing in your workout program.

Be sure to keep these things in mind the next time you’re doing an athlete’s workout routine so you keep getting the results you’re looking for and not the one’s you don’t want. Also be aware that just about every athlete out there has their own fitness trainer to help them succeed more. A trainer who can motivate and coach you to push your limits is an invaluable resource in getting in the best shape of your life.

If you’re looking to buy a workout video but you’re not quite sure which one to choose, then this article is for you. In this article we will look at the benefits of exercise videos, the types of exercise, and the top personal trainers to look out for when buying a fitness DVD.

Benefits of Exercise Videos

Convenience: do your workouts in the comfort of your own home, at whatever time best suits you and your daily schedule.

Low Cost: buy the video once, and then use it over and over again, rather than paying for individual sessions with a personal trainer.

Types of Exercise:

Weight Training: good for people who want to build up their muscles and improve their body shape.

Dance Fitness: a great fun way to improve your fitness whilst enjoying yourself.

Walking: the most natural form of exercise you can do, and best of all, it’s free! Great for people who live in rural areas, especially if it’s hilly.

Aerobics: a type of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines with the goal of improving all elements of fitness (muscular strength, flexibility and cardio-vascular fitness).

Pilates: a physical fitness system invented by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The goal of the method is to increase flexibility, strength and body control.

Yoga: an ancient set of physical and mental disciplines originating from India. Although many people now associate the word “yoga” with the stretching and toning exercises, this is only one aspect of it.

Exercise Ball: an inflatable ball is used as part of the equipment for a variety of exercises, such as physical therapy, athletic training and even weight training. Some people even claim that even just using an exercise ball instead of a chair is good for developing the abdominal muscles.

Stretching: the process of deliberately elongating a specific skeletal muscle or muscle group in order to improve elasticity and help with muscle tone.

Kickboxing: as with Dance Fitness, this is another great fun way to get in shape.

Pregnancy Workouts: a set of exercises tailored specifically for a pregnant woman, taking into consideration the care of the developing baby and the range of movements that are safe and comfortable for the woman to do.

Tai Chi Chuan: translated literally as “Supreme ultimate Fist”, this form of exercise is actually an ancient Chinese martial art, and is practised both for its defence training and health benefits.

Top Workout Instructors to Look Out for

Of course, there are many different fitness instructors with their own workout DVDs, but some are better than others. Here is a short list of the biggest names in fitness training. You will probably recognise some of these names from their appearances on TV.

Jillian Michaels: A popular American personal trainer from Los Angeles, California. She is widely known for her appearances on TV shows such as Losing It With Jillian and The Biggest Loser, and she is known for her intense, forceful manner, pushing people to their limits. She has 202 exercise videos available.

Bob Harper: An American personal trainer from Nashville, Tennessee. Like Jillian Michaels, he has also appeared on the TV show The Biggest Loser. He has 39 exercise videos available.

Jackie Warner: an American fitness trainer from Fairborn, Ohio. She is best known for her appearances on TV show Work Out. She has 38 exercise videos available.

Leslie Sansone: A health expert who specialises in walking as the main form of exercise. Her videos will be more suited to people who generally want to get in shape and lose weight, rather than people want to tone up and develop their muscles. She has 119 exercise videos available.

Denise Austin: American fitness instructor, author, columnist, and former member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. She has 86 exercise videos available.
